My Favorite Ways to Eat Nut Butters
Here are some of my favorite ways to use different nut butters…
1. Almond Butter with apple sauce with cinnamon sprinkled on top – a great after dinner snack if you’re looking for something sweet.
2. Almond or Walnut Butter on pretty much any fruit. My new favorite is almond butter on fresh figs…yummy!
3. Nut Butter and Apple Butter Sandwich – one of my favorite on-the-go breakfast options. I use 1-2 tbsp of nut butter and 1 tbsp of apple butter on 2 slices of sprouted grain bread and out the door I go.
4. Cashew Butter on celery sticks – add a few raisins for a little sweet taste.
5. Walnut Butter in oatmeal – I mix the walnut butter right into my warm oatmeal. Sometimes I add 1 tsp of honey as well.
All of these options are a great way to get a ton of healthy fats, especially Omega 3’s, into your daily meal plans.

What do ou think about Larabars for a quick snack? Some of the flavors have sugar ( like chocolate brownie) but many of them do not.
I find apple butter very sweet and prefer a straight-out nut-butter and apple sandwich.
Nut butters can be great in savoury combinations too. Try a nut butter and cucumber sandwich, or nut butter with sprouts. I know someone who eats nut butter and hummous sandwiches.
Amanda, as long as you are paying attention to the ingredients in each flavor of Larabars (and avoiding things like sugar), they look okay.
Is it okay to do protein drinks for breakfast. Time doesn’t always allow to fix and then sit down and eat.
Almond butter is amazing on a sweet potato! With some cinnamon as well.
Do I make my own nut butters? If so, how do I make it? Where do I get coconut milk? Do I make it myself, or buy it already made. If I make it myself, how do I make it. I really would like to do these recipe`s, but do not live near a health food store, so making these ingredients myself seems to be the only way for me to be able to do them. My problem is, I don`t know how to do them. Any help would be very much appreciated. Larry
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT AGAVE NECTAR AS A SWEETNER?? IT IS NATURAL AND HAS A LOW GLYCEMIC INDEX
I’m in love with nut butters right now! Larry, they are easy to make. Just toast off the nuts you want to use (and peel them if they have a skin) then pop them in a food processor. You’ll need to leave it running for quite a long time, and keep scraping down the sides. First you’ll get chopped nuts, then power, and eventually the oils leak out and you get butter – just add a small amount of oil if it needs loosening up further!
Larry,
You can buy canned coconut milk in most grocery stores.

@Larry: Put about a cup of raw nuts in a food processor and pulse a few times to get it going. Then run the processor while adding in some oil (maybe a couple tablespoons or so) then stop and check it. If it looks too dry, add in a couple more tablespoons while running the processor, but only do about 1-2 tablespoons at a time. Keep doing this until it looks right to you. You can probably add a bit of salt in, but I’ve gotten used to it without salt so I leave it out. Coconut milk, I find at an Asian store but if you have a large market near you, check their Asian foods aisle. You can also order it online, but check to make sure they can deliver to you. Hope that helps.
It’s absolutely a superb blog. It is always a delight to read your posts about good nutrition and dieting as I learn a lot from your thoughtful insights. Thanks for sharing with us. Keep up the good work!
Christina, I don’t recommend using agave as a sweetener. Check out the DSP Facebook page or Dr. Mercola’s website for more information as to why.
wow ! I just read the mercola report on Agave! I am so upset!! I just dont like Stevia at all/ it has a funky weird taste to me/ what’s a girl to do? So NEVER EVER use agave?
so i am on Day 8 o fteh program ( the 2 week one) and I havent noticed a change. I am following teh program pretty closely. When should I start noticing a change or loss, or something???? I am vegetarian ( eat eggs) any good suggestions for us animal lovers to make this a bit easier? No soy! No cheese! No yogurt! I hate cottage cheese! so I am down to just nuts and eggs and beans fro protein. But beans are considered a carb.
Mercola did say there are a few minority companies that have honest good practices that produce organic Raw Agave that ultilizes the natural mineral and very low processing heat which makes Agave 50% fructose as opposed to 90%. It’s important to know organic raw agave is a different story than reg agave. wilderness family nat has good stuff. Also, stevia is quite delicious in the natural plant form. We got some fresh Stevia plant this summer and sun dried the leaves. My husband hates sugar alternative usually, but he loved the leaves. If you hate stevia powder, look into the fresh plant. Bodyecology diet has another great alternative to those who dont like stevia, lakanto
The Vita-Mix machine is a wonderful way to make nut-butter !
Recipe book and booklets come with the set. I love it !
isabel i know nuts and almonds are good but i absoutly hate them all of them, cashews, almonds, peanuts, walnuts ,pistashios, pecans you name it but i’m hopeing the apple butter and almond butter will work for me but what other kind of snacks are there?
I love nut butter! Thanks for the tips I’ve never thought of eating it in that way.
we use raw sugar and fresh honey for sweeting and they are healthy with no preservatives. We have a Whole Foods in Baton Rouge, louisiana and they have organic foods. That is all my family eats. They also have a web page and you can order online. I use fresh herbs when I can and dried when I can’t. When using dry spices and herbs pour in the palm of your hand and crush with your thumb to bring out the oils and true flavors. You can also use a coffee grinder if you have one. Just put all your spices in together and grind your food will taste alot better.
Thanks Alice! That is a really helpful tip. Im trying to use more herbs when I cook and my fam like them = ) Do you have a web page for your store? If so, please post it.
Thanks,
Aujen~

I love macademia nut butter (almond too) on apple slices.
The best best way to get nut butter, is with a Champion juicer. You can buy them on eBay. I’ve had mine over twenty five years, so many uses. You don’t have to do add anything, perhaps 2 teaspoons of salt for a three pound bag. No added oils of any kind, it has it’s own delicious oil!
What do you think about Mrs. May’s Trio bars? All natural with nuts, seeds and fruits, vegan, 0 trans fats, kosher, no additives, no preservatives, and free of gluten, dairy, wheat, and GMO.
Is evaporated cane juice better than sugar or are they basically the same thing?
Brigitte, I have never heard of Mrs. May’s Trio bars before, but I looked them up. Evaporated cane juice is basically the same thing as sugar – your body responds to it in the same way, so it’s something you want to stay away from.
Well, i love hummus and my first intro to it was while I was a chef in the cafe of a natural foods store. But for me (sometimes) tahini tastes a bit bitter – so one day I got the notion to try it with natural peanut butter and it was delicious! The customers RAVED about my hummus because the PB made it more palatable. THEN – I made it with cashew butter and it was magnificent. Thought I’d died and gone to chickpea heaven!!! It’s also lovely with macadamia butter but it’s so expensive. Giant Food (I live in MD) carries their own organic line of food now and their nut butters are delicious and reasonably priced! Enjoy!
Luanne, do you have a really good recipe for Plain Hummus and if I add the butters how much per. Thank you
The respice for Nut butter and hummus sounds Delightful and Tasteing.
It sounds weird, but mixing raw almond butter with chunky salsa (sugar-free, of course!) is a delicious snack with celery sticks! Snacks don’t always have to be sweet.
)
I have heard of organic UNPASTEURIZED NUTS.
Is that necessary?
Mrs. Isabel,
What do you say about honey? Is it allowed?
How about peanut butter? We are fortunate to be able to grind the peanut butter in the grocery store and have make major changes in the past few months to get rid of high fructose corn syrup. It all started to get rid of the junk they now add to foods ESP. For our children
Almonds do have omega 3′s but they are heavy on the omega 6′s making them less desirable than walnuts.
One of my favorite ways to eat nut butter is over steamed broccoli! I’d had broccoli with a peanut sauce at a restaurant & loved it. I stopped eating peanut butter (heard its toxic) and tried it with homemade raw cashew/brazil nut butter. It’s delicious!
You said to stops with artificial sweeteners(Splenda, Equal, etc). What is the best option then? I know you used Stevia in a tea recipe…
I use a product called xylobrit. It is made from xylitol an essential sugar that doesn’t react in your body like sugar or sweeteners do.
