Traveling? Don’t Sabotage Your Eating Plan to Lose Weight

eating plan to lose weightI’m always on the go, so I understand the challenges of sticking to an eating plan to lose weight while traveling. I love being healthy; so I don’t mind doing what it takes to keep my eating habits on point. There are a lot of variables involved during travel, so it’s easy to let healthy habits go up in smoke. When you hit the road, don’t sabotage your efforts to lose weight. Use these tips to stay on track.

Don’t Attack the Snack Machine

If you let yourself get really hungry, you’re not going to care what you eat as long as those hunger pangs go away. If there’s a snack machine nearby, you’re going to pounce on it. Next thing you know, you’re popping Skittles and Doritos, and washing it all down with a cola.

If you’re going to be somewhere where you won’t have access to a store, take some nutritious snacks with you. This way, you don’t have to raid the nearest vending machine when the munchies strike. Foods like apples, pears, carrots, nut butters and raw nuts don’t require refrigeration and they last for days.

Drive By Fast Food Joints and Don’t Stop

Traveling almost always involves eating out. Dining out is fine as long as you stay away from those fast food joints. There’s rarely anything on fast food menus that hasn’t been processed, greased and fried. These foods are so unhealthy they should come with double chin and heart attack warning labels attached.

Instead of McDonalds, Burger King and other fast food spots, opt for dine in style restaurants. These types of restaurants almost always have foods that fit into a healthy eating plan – grilled fish, grilled chicken, lean meats, omelets, steamed veggies (you get the idea).

Don’t Eat What They’re Eating

You’re dining out with your traveling buddies, and they all order mayo-slathered burgers and greasy French fries. You don’t want to seem like a snob or a stick in the mud by ordering salmon over a bed of greens, so you say, “I’ll have what they’re having.” Tempting, I know. I’ve been there more times than I care to count.

It’s easy to get caught up when your friends, family or coworkers are eating whatever they want without a second thought about their health. Whenever you feel tempted to “blend in” by ordering what everyone else is having, take a step back and remember why you made the decision to lose weight in the first place.

Put Saboteurs in Their Place

I can’t figure out for the life of me why the people in our lives intentionally try sabotage our efforts to get healthy. When you go out, these people will offer you things they know you don’t want to eat. When you tell them no thanks, they continue to push. They might say, “You really out to try this chocolate cake, it’s the best,” or “Don’t be so uptight, it’s just a piece of pie.”

Misery loves company. If your friends, family and acquaintances aren’t happy with themselves, they may not want you to be happy either. Don’t let these saboteurs coax you into eating something you know is not good for your health.

Here’s a tip to get the saboteurs off your back: Next time someone tries to shove a piece of cake down your throat, say something like “I love the way eating healthy makes me feel. I’ll pass on the cake, thanks.” This statement makes it clear that you value your health and you have no intention of downing that cake. You’ll feel confident, empowered and you’ll love yourself that much more in the morning.

Eating healthy while traveling is certainly tough – but it’s doable. If you stay away from snack machines and fast food joints, and refuse to let others push you into making bad food choices, you’ll be just fine.
