Best Pre-Workout Nutrition

December 1, 2009

Hope you had a great weekend!

If you live in the states, you’re probably still recovering from your Thanksgiving meal or maybe just getting done with your leftovers.  There’s only so many ways to have leftover turkey and I think my family and I exhausted every option.

I did have to fit in a little bit of time to work this weekend.  Actually, it wasn’t really work.  It was a little gift I put together for my good friend and fitness author Vince DelMonte.  He’s celebrating his 30th birthday this week by re-launching his “No Nonsense Muscle Building and Six Pack DVD Seriesand I put together a little something for him to go along with his birthday celebration.

Just so you have the inside scoop though, here’s a video that will not only tell you exactly what I put together for Vince, but I answer the very popular question, “What should I eat before my workout?”

Find out exactly what I was up to in my latest video here:

If you’re wondering what foods are best to eat before your workout, watch as I give you the answer here:

  1. Isabel …. I do love you !!!!! I want a wife exactly like you!!!! LOL
Seriously you are giving me a lot of goooood advice !! You are making my life easier !!! I used to research for these information before on the web and it was a stress and it took me a lot of time …. but now …. here you are !!!
I mean I have to admit I knew already most of thing you say , but I do not know everything you say. So my knoledge is improving costantly and easily now thanks to you !!! And there`s always something new to learn anyway ….always!!
So to conclude I say to you, I didn`t buy your program because I bought “The truth about six pack ” and “The fat burning kitchen ” already and I`m getting SERIOUS results, but you know what ? I`m going to buy your program as well very soon just to show you my appreciation ,for what you are doing , in a tangible way !!

  2. Thanx Isabel for your advice. That is been one of the question I always forget to ask my trainer. Thanx for the info. I’m looking foward to the next video. I just got your program and the metabolic test already gave me a few ansewrs to some of my problems. THANK YOU!!I’m starting today…so…will see. I’ll let you know.

  3. thank you isabel…you are sooo knowledgable and helpful!!! i pretty much only work out in the morning, and always have a little something to eat before, but i don’t have enough time to wait an entire hour to excercise…is half an hour ok? please help me figure out what to do….thank you so much!

  4. Awesome! I’ve been trying to figure out what to eat on my own and haven’t had much luck. Looking forward to hearing what you think about post workout nutrition!

  5. Hi Isabel !
Thanks for advise. I noticed that I’ve done it little bit wrong. I’m taking proteins AFTER workouts not before. Pre workouts ( I go to gym straight from my daily work ) I don’t take anything, I normally survive with my lunch. I thought that I should take some carbs….not too much… but so that I have enough energy to do my trainings. Am I totally wrong with that ???

  6. Hi Isabel, thank you for this video. I was only wondering, since the only time I have during the day for a workout is in the morning, before anyone wakes up, is it okay for me to eat less than an hour before? I usually eat a few soaked alm,ond(2-3) and a little bite of banana.

  7. Hi Isabel,
Is there any difference on pre-workout meal for long distance runners. Do I need to pack more carbs on this meal than just a fruit?

Thanks again for all your good advice, it is so helpful.

  8. Isabel,

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. The pre-workout meal has been a question of mine for a while. I look forward to the post work-out meal video!

    Thanks

  9. Hi Isabel,

First of all, thank soooooooooooo much you for all the newsletters I\\\’ve been receiving for FREE. They\\\’ve helped me sooooooooo much. Believe it or not, I\\\’ve been able to maintain my weight and especially not feel hungry, simply by applying the principles you share in the newsletters over the last 6 months (I\\\’ve felt very much in control of my body and not the other way around). This has happened without exercising regularly(due to personal cirucumstances at the moment, not recommended btw) I haven\\\’t yet read the DSP manual.
I\\\’ve finally decided to purchase the DSP with my friend Solange (we split the cost) and this morning I just starting reading the manual. I\\\’ve talked about you and your principles to anybody who would listen (this is all before buying your manual).

After watching your video, I\\\’m still confused as to why I need to eat before I workout first thing in the moning (which is when I like to workout).
1.If I wake up let\\\’s say 5:30 to start my workout at 6, I\\\’m not that hungry (actually not at all) and I get thru my workout pretty ok. Does eating pre-workout a must even for people who don\\\’t experience hunger throughout the workout?

    2. Because it\\\’s so early in the morning, I usually don\\\’t have an hour before I start the workout, at the most I have 20-30min, so if I go ahead with eating, must I wait more than that?

And thanks again for your amazing amazing work. God bless you and your husband and little Christian.
    Rachel

  10. Thank you Isabelle for all the info!
    my q’ions:
do you recommend working out at night or 6ish?? or it doesnt really matter? also,
I don’t do this but is it ‘bad’ to go to bed an hour after a workout or taking a nap??

    Thanks again!:):)

  11. Isabel you mentioned a lean protien and veggies or fruit an hour before workout. If I had some lean turkey should it be within the form of a pita sandwich or just a handful of turkey? Also what type of veggie and or fruit are you referring to? Thanks in advance for your help!

  12. Hi,I thought that was better to eat maltodextrin (carbs) before or some fruits before it, and protein in more quantity after workout. I still get confused on it.
    thanks

  13. Great suggestions. I usually am not really hungry when I get up in the morning so after my digestion supplements and a cup of green tea, I usually do about 30 minutes of combined aerobic and strength exercises. Then I eat a breakfast of plain yogurt and blueberries. Not sure if that is the best way to do it but it works for me and I’m an exceptionally healthy 60++ year old.

  14. Hey Rob,
Before the workout it should be just a few slices of turkey and either a fruit or vegetable. It doesn’t matter what kind of fruit, but it should be low on the glycemic index.

  15. Hey Inga,
Yes, but only eat a little bit. You should not feel uncomfortable during your workout.

  16. Hey Hannu,
Watch the video again. You should be having lean protein and low GI carbs before. Stay tuned for what you should be having after.

  17. Hey Laurel,
A half hour is fine, just don’t eat too much so you are no uncomfortable during your workout.

  18. Hi Isabel…I usually work out at 7am. Is it okay to have a small amount of All Bran cereal and organic skim milk 1/2 hour before work out?

    Dee

  19. Hey Dee,
I wouldn’t recommend any cereals before your workout. Watch the video again and try some of the suggestions I mention there.

  20. I use to wonder what to eat before a workout and how long before should I eat. Thank you for confirming an hour before workout. Also you confirmed the foods that I have been consuming— such as the lean protein i.e. turkey or chicken. I do start my day with 3 hard boiled egg whites for the protein part and then I have a half cup of oatmeal with ground flake seeds and a banana. No dairy on my oatmeal.
It wasn\\\’t until I started eating the hard boiled egg whites that I found out why eggs seem to bother me. It was the yolks that have been causing me problems with my digestion. Now thanks to Michael Thrummond I am able to have eggs without any problems as I mainly consume the whites. If I am having the lean proteins such as the turkey or chicken as you mentioned I also eat a cup of some sort of greens…I also have a cup of coffee as I can do caffeine.

Thank you and keep up the good work. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

  21. I currently do a high intensity workout after work…say around 6:30. I have about an hour drive home and currently eat an apple and have a Pre-Workout Drink (M5)(not a protein shake) on my way home. I seem to have enough energy so that’s not a problem but I’m trying to build lean muscle mass. Is what I take sufficient enough or should I do anything else?
